Werner shot to fame as a director with the 1972 film Aguirre, the Wrath of God. The guy and a film crew spent two months filming the film in the Amazon rainforest on a shoestring budget. The crew was dead set on telling the story of the conqueror Lope de Aguirre, who was obsessed with an idea.

Film critics began to associate Herzog’s films with a new generation of German filmmaking that resurrected the country’s heritage, including works by Wim Wenders, Volker Schlöndorff, and Werner Fassbinder.

The director’s previous film, from 1981, was equally impressive. God’s Angry Man, Werner’s film, told the story of a television preacher, an American pastor named Gene Scott. The video features footage of Scott on the set of his TV shows, with a focus on fund-raising efforts, a barrage of audience allegations, and a plethora of other intriguing facts. Interviews with Scott and his parents are also included in the film.
